Yarn Tote {Tutorial}

Share
I’m so giddy! I can’t believe I made it to the next round of OMTWI!
I am a long side so many talented women! It was a close week, everyone did such an amazing job!
My entry was the Keep Calm and Carry Yarn Tote! I am in LOVE with it! I crochet a lot in the car with my husband when he drives around for work and I ALWAYS get my yarn all tangled up and it is just super annoying! So now when I go in the car or sit on the couch or go the the park with the kids, I just take my tote and have everything I need! The yarn doesn’t get tangled it… it’s so nice! So just remember….

This theme was to use something from The Graphics Fairy, and I used the yarn ball in the printable I made.
This tote is pretty easy to make. I’d like to say I made it in a certain amount of time, but let’s face it, most my projects take days no matter what because I have to start and stop so many times with the kids. But at least it’s easy right? : )

There are so special things about this tote bag! You pull the yarn right through the side of the bag (my favorite part), there is storage for the crochet hooks on the side and there is a pouch in the back so you can carry any patterns or a notebook to write new patterns on! Below you can see how the yarn stacks right on top of each other inside the bag!

Here is what you will need.
{Supplies}

-1 Yard of a canvas material
- 1/4 of a yard to print your Keep Calm printable on (I used the turquoise)
- Coordinating thread, scissors, and sewing machine
- small grommets, found mine at Joann’s
- one sheet of sticky back fusible web
- and then you can print the “keep calm and carry yarn” printable
HERE

{Cut List}
2 – 18.5” x 15.5” pieces (front and back)
1 -  52.5” x 7” (this will be your 3 sides)
1 -  5” x 7” (slots for crochet hooks)
1 -  15.5” x 12” (back pocket)
2 – 5” x 34” (straps)
{Tutorial}
1. Print the “Keep Calm” printable onto your fabric, I have a tutorial for that HERE
cut it down the the size you want. The file of the printable is set up for a full sheet of paper, so if you want it smaller then you will need to resize it. Set this aside
2. Take your back panel and your back pocket pieces and hem to tops of each (1/2” seam allowance)
Put the back pocket on top of the back panel and sew a basting stitch up the sides lining up the 3 raw edges. (set aside)
Step 1_edited-1
3. Take your front panel and hem the top of it (1/2” seam allowance). Now we are going to attach our Keep Calm sign. Once it is the size you want stick the fusible web to the fabric you printed on, center it on your front panel, and follow the instructions of the fusible web. I then sewed a zig zag around the border of the fabric.

4. Take your side panel piece and hem both the short edges (1/2” seam allowance). Then take your piece for the crochet hook slots and hem the top and bottom of it. Then, measure down to where the the side panel meets the bottom of the front panel and top stitch it to the side, then sew straight lines down to create your “slots” Then line it up and pin it, right sides together, to the side of your front panel. Your side panel will wrap around to create both sides as well as the bottom, it is one long piece.
Step 2
5. Continue pining the side panel around all 3 edges, right sides together, making sure to curve around the corners, until it looks like this.
Step 5 A step 5 B
6. The sew around using a 3/8” Seam allowance, make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end.
7. Now attached your back panel the same way you did the front, right sides together. Sew around the 3 sides. This will be the view of the inside.
Step 7
8. Now we are going to enclose the raw edges. On the right side of the bag start with the two bottom seams and pinch them together. Press and sew. Once you do the two bottom sides, then do the 4 side seams.
Step 8_edited-1
9. Now we are going to work on the straps.
Take your strap pieces you cut out and fold them over 1/2” on each side and press, then fold in half lengthwise and press. Top stitch all the away along each side.
step 9 a step 9 b
10. I made my straps kind of long because I tend to carry a lot of things so it just worked for me… you can shorten them though if you like.
Once you are done with that, line them up where you want them at sew it on the inside of your tote. Sew a square and then an X through the square for stability.
11. Now on the side opposite your crochet hook slots, attach the grommets. I spaced mine out evenly, and I wanted four… I probably could have squeezed another in there if I wanted.
step 10

    Your idea for this bag reminds me of the Beehive my Mom had in the 1950's – it was a blue plastic beehive with a screw-on bottom, and holes in the top for the wools to be threaded through. In those days we bought skeins of wool and hand-rolled them ourselves, so the wool pulled from the outside – which meant the ball of wool rolled off on its' own mission! Your idea is great. Hope you don't mind if I make a suggestion – to prevent the wool from pulling back into the bag if it is not in use, you might sew on a button below each grommets on which to wind the loose end of the wool. Margaret.
