Desk Caddy {recycled materials}

Share

Hey everyone! So you might remember when I entered the Earth 911 Challenge a few weeks back. The challenge was to create a way to organize the items on your desk using recycled materials. I made a Desk Caddy, and today I’m going to share with you how I made it!

This was really a lot of fun to make. I didn’t want to spend any money on it, plus it had to be from recycled materials…. so I search around my house. I found 3 pieces of scrap  wood that we used for the slats on Aubrey’s bed, cardboard from a cereal box, fabric scraps, and corner brackets. I am really into yellow right now. It has always been one of my favorite colors and I will be incorporating it into a lot of my home decor when we finally move! : ) So this will fit in perfectly.

The fabric I used is one of my favorites! I used it to line the drawers in a dresser I re-did a while back. I hope I have enough left to make some pillows out of it!! So the whole idea of this little caddy is to help me keep track of the tools I am using while sewing. I am always setting my scissors, seam ripper, etc down and loosing them. We’ll see if it works or not ; )

So let’s take a look at how I made it. First I took those three pieces of wood I found and painted them white. Easy enough right?

 Then I took the prettiest piece of wood and painted stripes on the front. Yes, that is washi tape. I couldn’t find my painters tape… that stuff really is good for everything!

Next I took those three pieces of wood, laid one flat on the counter (for the bottom) and glued the other two pieces along the length of the bottom piece. I used Gorilla Glue (totally awesome) and clamped together. I forgot to take a picture of this step, but while that was drying I measured out the ends of the caddy and cut two pieces of cardboard from an old cereal box.

Can you guess who bought the Coco Puffs, it was either me or my husband… hmm….? Then I just wrapped some fabric around and glued it on there! Super easy stuff here!

Then I glued these onto the side of the wood portion of the caddy and attached the corner brackets at the bottom to secure everything together.

So now I have a cute little caddy to go on my desk! Not that I can find my desk right now being that it’s covered in fabric, but it’s there somewhere ; ) Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s craft area looks like the fabric monster came through?!
