I am addicted to quilting! It’s true…. I totally blame Ashley at Mommy by Day Crafter by Night and her quilt a long! I made my first real quilt following her quilt a long and made this zig zag quilt, now I’m hooked! : )
For this quilt I was inspired by Rachel at Family Ever After’s quilt a long. She did it along with the one at Mommy by Day Crafter by Night and just did a ruffle quilt instead of the zig zag. I changed the pattern up quite a bit though since it was so much smaller. So I’ll give you the tutorial for mine. If you want to make a big one, I would head over to Family Ever After.
I sooooo wish I had little newborn baby to lay on there for a photo shoot! I love little babies on baby doll beds with their little naked baby bottoms and squishy faces!
This actually matches Addison’s bedding. Her bedding was the first thing I sewed so I had no idea how to estimate yardage and ended up with a whole bunch extra. Since she is so in to baby dolls right now I thought this would be a great thing to make with the leftovers. I still have more too!
I made it for a Christmas gift for her. Have you seen the Christmas in July Series from last week? There are some great gift ideas for kids there, and you can link up your gift ideas and enter to win a $50 Pick Your Plum Box too!
Let’s make a baby doll quilt
{Cut List}
You will also need batting the same size, or maybe a little bigger than the backing (you want to have extra incase of shifting. That shouldn’t happen too much since it’s such a small quilt.
Ok, let’s start putting it all together.
{tutorial}
one.
First you are going to take your top fabric strips you cut out and ruffle each long side. You can use a ruffle foot if you have one, or just the old fashioned way of sewing a stitch along each long side and pulling the bottom thread to ruffle. If you aren’t familiar with that method there are tons of tutorials on that around that will show you better than I can explain.
You want to gather the fabric until they measure 24” long. Then you will topstitch the ruffle onto your ruffle lining fabric. You will end up with three strips. Ruffles on top, lining piece on bottom.
two.
Now we are going to piece these together to make the quilt top. Figure out what order you want them in. Then to sew them together place them right sides together. I then used to stitch line from attaching the ruffles to the lining piece as a guide.
Now repeat with your last strip. Just to be clear, we are attaching each of the strips on the long sides, so the strips will run vertically.
three.
No we are going to add the batting and quilt back. You will layer them just like they will look when you are done with the quilt.
four.
once you have that all laid out and make sure backing and batting is smoothed out with no wrinkles you are going to use safety pins to pin it together so it doesn’t shift around in the next step.
five.
Now we are going to “quilt” it. I used a technique called stitching in the ditch. It’s probably the easiest way to quilt… you will just simply top stitch in the seams of each piece. This will pretty much make the thread invisible since it will be in the seam. Try to sew as straight as possible though because you will see it on the backing.
six.
Now you just want to square up your quilt and trim all your edges. I don’t spend a whole lot of time this because it was just for a baby doll, but if you are good at it, go for it!
seven.
now you just need to add your binding using the 5 1/2” x 90”. You will need to piece some strips together to get the 90”. Here is a great tutorial on handmade quilt binding and how to attach it to your quilt.
Now you have an adorable ruffle baby doll quilt : )
Now let’s see if I can actually wait until Christmas to give it to Addison. : )

Thanks Tauni! I have to admit… I have been playing with it a little ; ) Thanks for stopping by!
I LOVE IT! Sorry I got you hooked on quilting! It’s addicting!! ;) xoxo
Thanks Ashley! I am totally addicted! I have had fabric sitting around forever to do a superhero quilt for me son, but the fabric is blocks of comics so I am going to have to kind of make my own patter, so I was a little intimidated to start there. I can’t wait to make it for him. Thanks for stopping by!
Love that shabby chic look. I don’t think I’ve ever seen ruffling like that done on a quilt. Perfect for this project.
Thank you so much Shari! Have a great week!

This is SO adorable! Did you also make the bed? I would love a tutorial on how to make the bed!!
Thanks so much Karen! I didn’t make the bed, I wish I could say I did though. I bought mine at Joanns. I believe Ana White has a tutorial on making a baby doll bed though. : )
Ashley,, Did I miss the instructions on how you made that bed? I would love to see those too!!
No, I didn’t make that bed, I wish I had… but I just bought it on clearance at Joann’s : )
What is the finished size suppose to be? Also I have not seen a binding that is 5 1/2 inches for a doll quilt. Looking at the picture where is the binding that is that wide?
The finished size is approx 25″ x 14″. I made my own binding. I cut a piece of fabric 5 1/2″ x 90″ (I had to piece it together) and folded it in half following the directions on the tutorial I linked to. Most binding is 2.5 or 2.25″, but I just wanted I nice thick binding. Totally just my preference, you could use whatever size binding works best for you : ) Let me know if you have any other questions.
