Did you know that March is Nation Craft Month? I haven’t done a whole lot of crafting lately, but I never want to pass up the opportunity to have fun with my kids, and since they all love crafting these DIY Keychains were the perfect project for them! My daughter HAS to have little things to carry around in her purses…. She is the girliest girl ever and I’m over here looking for my drill hoping I can find time to take a shower. I often wonder where she gets it from… but I’m so glad she is the way she is because I love doing all those girly things with her. My oldest opted out of this one, but my 2 year old jumped on board to make these cute little DIY Keychains made from wooden hearts. I think this project was to feminine for my 8 year old son, but maybe it’s time he shifted over to woodworking with me anyways! ; )
These DIY keychains are the perfect craft to make with a group of kids, and would be so awesome as a classroom gift, you could put the letter of each student’s name on there! Cute right?
To get started on our family craft night we made a fun little station on our dining room table by covering it with a roll of drawing paper, and gathered our supplies. Crafting is awesome for many reasons, but it’s such a great way to gather socially and connect with each other! Look at those busy little hands!
Supplies:
Apple Barrel Paints
Paint Brushes
Wooden Hearts (found at craft stores)
Drill
Drill bit
Key Rings
Jump Rings
Jewelry Pliers

How to Make DIY Keychains
The first step you will probably want to do before setting your kids up for their craft night, unless you have older children who you think would be able to use a drill. The hearts come as a solid piece, so using your drill and drill bit you will just need to make a little hold close to the edge of the heart. Make sure you make it close enough to the edge so that your jump ring will fit.
Once you have the holes in place, it’s time to let the kids go to town with paint and paintbrushes. We used the Apple Barrel Paints because they are family-friendly and water-based for easy soap and water clean-up, certified AP non-toxic, and made in the USA making them the perfect choice for crafting with kids! Apple Barrel also provides great value, comes in Regular, Multi-Surface and Gloss formulas with a huge selection at Walmart.
Once they have painted their hearts you can let them dry, flip them over and paint the other side. You can also add monograms using stencils, or let them paint a design on top of the base coat. There is no limit on what your kids can do with these little hearts!
Once the hearts are completed it’s time to add the key rings. You can add the key rings directly to the hearts like I did above for the sake of my 2 year old… but if you want them to hang a little nicer and look prettier on your key ring you will need to add some jump rings using jewelry pliers. You can make the chain as short or long as you prefer.
Now it’s time to add some keys and enjoy your new DIY Keychain.
There are so many different things you can make with these Apple Barrel Barrel paints! They are a fun, affordable way for people to explore creativity and make memories together. Check out some of the other ideas below! : )

Could you use stamps instead of stencils? then coat it with gloss Mod Podge? Would make lovely gifts can’t wait to try it! Also how small of a drill bit are you using?
Thanks Katie
I don’t see why you couldn’t use stamps ; ). I’m not sure of the exact drill bit size. You would just need to make sure the hole is a little bigger than the ring itself.
Okay thank you!
