I think I might be slightly obsessed with planking things! I feel like it’s been happening a lot lately, but recently I’ve planked my master bedroom wall, a chalkboard, and now I’m planking a clipboard. Just talking about this takes me back to the episode of The Office where everyone goes around planking all over everything. I kinda feel that way, except I’m actually creating plants, not laying down on random things stiff as a board, haha!
I’ve actually teamed up with a few other ladies today to bring you this fun series with one power tool projects. Each one of us has to start somewhere when it pertains to building. I consider myself kinda lucky in this instance because I grew up with a father who built things all the time, so I was pre exposed. But there were quite a few years I didn’t do anything with wood so it was a little frightening getting back in to it. I’m here to tell you though, if I can use a power tool, so can you!
When it comes to working with wood and any kind of tool really, you have to look at it step by step. Of course you will glance at the big picture, but you can’t look at something complicated and think “I’ll never get there”. You have to take it one baby step at a time because if you can use a ruler, you can figure out where to place a piece of wood and attach it with a screw. Sure it can get more complicated than that. But like I said, baby steps ; ) So do you wanna make a clipboard? Let’s do this!
Supplies:
1 – 1×2 @ 8′
Drill
8 Mending plates (I got 2 pkg’s of 4 at Walmart)
Wood Glue
1 Clipboard Clip (Scrapbook section of Hobby Lobby)
Wood Stain – Minwax Special Walnut
How to Make a Wooden Clipboard
First you will need to cut your 1×2. If you don’t have a saw, that’s ok, both Lowe’s and Home Depot will be happy to do that for you ; ) I cut each of my 1×2’s @ 13″ for a total of 6 pieces.
Once you have all your pieces cut you are going to apply wood glue on the short side of the 3/4″ side of the board and then use the mending plates to keep them in place. Without the wood glue the mending plates themselves will leave everything pretty wiggly, so don’t skip out on the wood glue ; )
I worked by adding one piece of wood at a time and added the mending plates as I went, but here is an overall picture of what it should look like when you are done. So for this project, you are literally just using your drill to attach the mending plates to the back of your 1×2. See easy! Soon you will be building tables ; )
Once your glue is dry, it’s time to get it looking the way you want it! I stained mine with the Minwax Special Walnut, but you can use any stain color or even paint it. The choice is yours!
Then to apply the clipboard clip I just used a heavy duty thumbnail I had. You can also use your drill to add a screw if you wish, or perhaps a nail. I just happened to have this on hand so it worked out!
Now you can add a printable or photograph and enjoy your new piece of decor you built with your hands! You might recognize this little printable from my DIY Sharpie Tea Towels.
This phrase is still true ; ) without love and coffee, well…. it would be a little bit scarier in this world!
I am so excited to take part in this series with these fabulous women! One of the main reasons I enjoy blogging is through the hope that I can inspire women. I want women to know that they aren’t forced to pay for these types of services or wait on their husbands to get you. You can do this, and you can do it well! Please stay tuned for some more easy projects coming your way and be sure to check out some more great drill projects below!

Anyone who wields a power tool with any skill impresses me! This is lovely but I may need to create my own version of your print that talks about tea instead of coffee – for me (a 6 or 7 mugs a day girl) it has to be tea!
