Citronella Candles

  • Author: Ashley

Ingredients

Scale

Instructions

  1. Secure your wick to the bottom of your mason jar using hot glue
  2. Depending on your type of beeswax, you might need to use a knife to cut it into small pieces, if you bought it in pellets then you can skip this step.
  3. Fill your aluminum can to the top with beeswax, pressing down to ensure it is full.
  4. Place aluminum can in a saucepan of water and gently boil until the wax melts (it will have the consistency of oil)
  5. Add in approx 5 drops of citronella oil
  6. Gently stir to mix thoroughly
  7. Using tongs, pour the melted wax into your mason jar, keeping wick out of the way.
  8. Use your 2 coffee stirrers to hold the wick in place (or any method you find works)
  9. Let Cool
  10. Enjoy those mosquito free nights!

Notes

Beeswax comes in a natural color which is yellow, and also white. I used the white for my candles. A lot people suggest using organic filtered beeswax because pesticides may still be present, but since I am using these outdoors, I wasn’t to particular about the brand I used, but please take that into consideration when purchasing. Filling up your aluminum can makes 1 candle. If you want to make a large batch, you can use a double broiler to melt more wax at once. The amount of citronella oil is a personal preference. I found 5 drops per aluminum can to be great for me, and seems to work pretty well. Adjust as necessary. This will NOT keep away every single mosquito, but it certainly reduces the mosquito bites and I find that they work MUCH better than store bought!
