Diaper cakes are really fun to make! You can do sooo many different things with them!!
This is the one I made for a friend recently, it is pretty simple. You can put just about anything on a diaper cake! (toys, washcloths, animals, nursery decor, pictures, ect)
This diaper cake is on the smaller side I used one small package of size 1 diapers and had about 6 left over.
In order to make this diaper cake you will need:
Supplies
-Diapers ( depends on how big of a cake you want ) I think size 1 diapers are ideal. Newborn seem a little small to me, but it’s just a preference. I also prefer the swaddlers because they are all white. You can also get organic diapers if you want the beige color, seventh generation is a good brand!
-rubber bands (2 sizes, small for each individual diaper and a few big ones to go around each layer of the cake)
-A center structure. (I used a glass vase, but bottles are an awesome thing to use because they are useable)
-ribbon and/or fabric
-decor of your choice
-hot glue gun
Making the cake

1. First, you will need to take each diaper and roll it in. I like to roll from the top of the diaper towards the fold in the diaper.. so you don’t see the edges with the fastners.
Once you have a diaper rolled secure it with a rubber band in the middle *see above*
repeat for each diaper
** it is much easier to transport if you have some sort of solid base (I like hat box tops). You can slide it off on to a table, but I would suggest building it on a wood cutting board or something similar so you can carry it.**
2. Once you have all the diapers rolled and secured with rubber bands you will need to take your center structure ( as long as it is cylindrical — bottle/vase, ect) and put a rubber band around it. Then start making a circle around it inserting the diapers into the rubber band. Make sure you use a rubber band that will hold once you are done with each layer. Just keep adding circles until you get the size you want.
I used 2 circles of diapers for my bottom layer and 1 for my top layer.
You also want to line up your big rubber band that goes around the whole layer with the middle rubber band that is on each diaper *see above*
3. Next you will want to cover the rubber bands with ribbon or fabric. I have also wanted to try wraping each individual diaper in fabric but haven’t gotten there yet : ) Maybe next time! Just cut the ribbon long enough to go around your layer and a little overlap to hot glue it. I layered 2 different sizes of ribbon for this particular cake. Use as much ribbon or fabric as you like!
4. Next add your topper and/or accessories.
For this particular cake it was a very simple shower so I made the cake simple. There were no accessories or decor on the cake other thank my topper. I actually used a fabric block as a topper for the cake. You can find my block tutorial here. Other common toppers are flowers inserted in your center sturcture, stuffed animals, fabric flowers, toys, or picture frames.
Super easy huh?! And such a great gift or decoration for the host to use!
