I’m from the south. I was raised southern and all that comes with that will be forever part of me. Though I have absolutely no desire to ever live in the south again, I think I took away some pretty amazing traits. I always say sir and ma’am… it doesn’t mean your old, just that I respect you. I always hold the door for people behind me and give up my seats to older people. It’s just how I do things. I’ve always lived above ground level though. Basements were this weird creepy thing to me when I was a kid… I always just imagined the furnace coming to life like in Home Alone. But eventually one day my grown up self moved to Wisconsin and was introduce to basements. Now, I can’t imagine a house without one.
When we bought our house here in Utah we had a completely unfinished basement. It was a blank slate and we knew it would one day be our two older kids rooms. If you aren’t familiar with basements, don’t worry… ours has windows and proper fire escapes so it doesn’t feel like a basement at all! As the plans started take shape and we were making decisions, one of our biggest questions was what type of flooring we were going to put in our basement? We knew we didn’t want carpet. While there’s not a whole lot of flooding in Utah, there is still the chance of a busted pipe and carpet in a basement just didn’t jump out at us. Obviously that rules out wood and laminate too.
Basement flooring is seriously a tough decision, but we ended up going with Floor & Decor’s NuCore Plank in Coffee Oak. Floor & Decor has a HUGE selection of flooring both online and in store. My favorite thing about buying our flooring there though was not having to wait for the shipment to come in. We walked in, told them what we wanted, and about 10 minutes later it was in the back of our truck! Boom!
I encourage you to read all the amazing benefits of this flooring [here]. For how much this flooring looks like what you’d expect from laminate floors… I’m absolutely amazed!
The whole process has been fun to watch come together. My husband, some friends and family helped us frame everything out. We did however hire out the sheetrock and texturing. After watching them do it in a matter of 3 short visits, we decided it was well worth the money. They go so fast!! Plus we were trying to match the texture to the upstairs and they were spot on. We probably would’ve had it looking like a cake a toddler tried to ice, lol!
We did do the flooring ourselves though. And when I say we I mean my husband and our friends. I was off painting everything! But I did get to watch them install it and they just breezed right through it. This flooring is extremely easy to work with. We didn’t need any special tools, just a good razor blade, straight edge and a rubber mallet. It took them about 2 days to do two huge bedrooms and a small hallway. Not bad at all considering we saved thousands by doing it ourselves, not to mention the rock bottom prices we got by ordering our flooring directly from Floor & Decor.
Once the flooring was installed I couldn’t get over how it transformed this construction zone into the makings of two beautiful bedrooms! After the baseboards were installed it was a real space! Something we made happen from scratch. It was such a fulfilling moment to put all the finishing touches on my kids new bedrooms. My oldest was sharing a bedroom with my youngest and he is a kid who needs his own space, ss he was ecstatic to have his very own “big kid” space! I can’t believe how much older it made my kids seem to have these decorated rooms! It gave me a glimpse (which I quickly shoved out of my head) to their teenage years. They grow up way too fast!
As you can see from the pictures above our flooring got pretty dusty and dirty from us working in there from all the sheetrock dust that was throughout our basement. I have to brag a little because one swipe with my Norwex Mop system and it looked like it came straight out of the store! NuCore is Floor & Decor’s 100% Waterproof Floor, so it cleaned up so quickly and easily!
I still have work to do on their bedrooms. We just moved them down this week and I really have to see and feel the space before I can get it just right… but we are close! I’ll be sharing full reveals hopefully sometime this year, or maybe beginning of next year just depending on the holidays!
If you have a big flooring project up and are looking for some affordable options, be sure and check out your local Floor & Decor and take advantage of their free design services! They are extremely helpful and I’m so grateful to all the money they helped us save so we could put that money towards make these bedrooms something truly special for our kids!

WOW!!!! I love so many things about this white bedroom!!! I love the floors, I love the bed the decorations on the wall, and even though I am far from being a fan of distressed furniture I even like that on the desk, but, (I know you were waiting for that, lol!) the only thing I do not like and would need to change immediately if not sooner are the drawer pulls. EVERYTHING in this room says fun, whimsical, clean, crisp, classy, pure, especially with the splash of gold in different locations and then you look at this desk with the colonial drawer pulls and it is like finding a splash of spaghetti sauce right in the middle of your brand new crisp silk blouse. Please do not think I am being critical because I am not, I love everything about this room but I am hoping when you say you are not finished with the rooms that you might consider either painting the dresser the same color as the walls and add either glass drawer pulls, white ones or interesting gold ones or maybe wooden ones painted gold??? I can’t wait to see your final project as it is fun as can be and I just adore it!!!

As for the gray bedroom – You knocked this one out of the park!!! I love everything about this room. Everything goes perfectly, imho, and you have the splashes of color just where they are needed. Excellent job!!! Thumbs up!!
I hope that both of your children will enjoy their new room in good health always and with great appreciation for what their Mom has given them!!!
Damn, they look awesome! The white bedroom is my favorite: I love the elements you chose, the color scheme, the style, everything. Thanks for sharing!
I would love the challenge of designing an industrial bedroom space, especially since that’s a style I really need to explore more thoroughly. Some elements are easy: dark furnishings in natural wood with iron fittings. Leather in unusual places. ( I saw a tooled leather wall wrapped around a stone fireplace nook with two built in benches that really was awesome). There are a lot of industrial lighting fixtures on the market, as well as black pipe shelves. But the trick is to also soften those hard edged designs with comfort in mind. A highly polished cement floor that looks like a star map might look fantastic, but very cold and hard on ones feet. I think industrial and end up more medieval.
I love both bedrooms, but the black one is my favorite. The gorgeous bed pulls all the stunning pieces together and make the room fabulous. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, mine too. But I guess it’s better to use brighter colors in your kids’ rooms, especially for girls. But, of course, this is not the case, as there are other things that give that “bright” feeling, although there is black color.
I really love the choice of flooring. Actually, I have something similar. Although, I have to worry about cleaning it a lot. You can see dust on this floor very well so you have to clean it often. That’s one of the reasons why I bought a robotic vacuum cleaner. And now I don’t have any problems with cleaning and floor :D :)
Hi!! We are currently looking at NuCore Coffee oak and it’s been hard to find photos of any finished projects with this color. Seeing these definitely helps, it looks beautiful! So just to be clear you used that flooring in the basement and the kids rooms?
I love the gray wall.. I love how much it matches with the rug. Actually every detail is very well balanced. Very lovely!
Great article! Also, try the latest and trendy vacuum cleaners for your home or commercial use. Visit our website to find out the best vacuum cleaners to clean the dirt and debris from carpets, hardwood floors, pet hairs, rugs, etc.
We are considering this flooring for our new home and I was wondering how it’s held up over the years?
When it comes to choosing flooring for kids’ basement bedrooms, it’s important to prioritize durability, comfort, and safety.
