Disclosure: Hickory Hardware was nice enough to provide the dresser and the hardware, all opinions are my own!
I’m finally starting to finish some projects up and my bedroom is getting so close. I’ll be sharing the full reveal with you next week! Today I’ve got a little peek into one of my projects though, these Rustic Industrial Nightstands. A few other fabulous bloggers and myself were challenged by Hickory Hardware to makeover a basic Ikea Rast Dresser with their huge selection of hardware! I honestly think the hardest part about this was picking the hardware! I poured over their catalog for hours!
UPDATE: I finally got the tutorial for this piece up, get it HERE
I ended up going with these gorgeous Oxford Antique Windover Cup Pulls. My inspiration was an old vintage printer’s cabinet. I’ll be sharing a tutorial soon on how I got this planked look (update: get the tutorial HERE) without buying any extra materials very soon! : ) I just have to make another nightstand and photograph it this time ; )
Ikea Rast Hack | Rustic Industrial Nightstand
The color I used on this dresser was Urban Bronze. I ran across my paint chip card that I used for my living room (which is Sherwin Williams’ Worldly Gray) and this gorgeous deep/warm gray was at the very bottom. I knew I’d love it because my living room color is one of my favorites I’ve ever picked out! And it goes great with with my new cup pulls!
I sealed the nightstand with Annie Sloan Dark Wax. I didn’t really want to distress this piece (I know everyone just fainted) but I still wanted it to look a little vintage-y. It’s kinda hard to capture that in pictures but it really looks old!
Overall I’m extremely happy with how this turned out!! I enjoyed branching away from my usual furniture color, white and/or stained wood. It was kinda hard for me, and my husband almost fainted when I brought home this color, but it’s just perfect. He’s so proud, haha : ) I can’t wait to share the full reveal with you, so don’t forget to check back next week!

This looks amazing! Please post how you did it :)
Can’t seem to find the post that explains how you got the drawers to look like that. Am I overlooking?
I love the finished product! Did you ever post how you created the panels on the drawers? I can’t seem to find it in your recent posts.
HI Larissa, I’m working on that today : ) So it should be up in a few hours!
I love it!! I also have been looking for the prommised tutorial on how you created the planked look with no success… can you help us find it please? Thanks!!
Hi Noemi, I am working on it right now : ) It will be up some time today!
Hi Ashley,
I love your work! This is my first DIY project like this. Approximately how much paint would I need to buy to do two nightstands? Also, do I need to use a primer or anything like that?
Looking forward to seeing your followup post showing how you achieved the planked look.
Thanks!!!
Hi Daryl, I only bought a quart of this paint and it was more than enough, but it depends on what size your piece of furniture is. I would venture to say that a quart would be plenty for any piece of furniture though. You can use a primer if you want. It does give you a more even application. I didn’t prime this because it was from ikea, I were using raw lumber I would definitely suggest a coat of primer otherwise it will soak your paint up quite a bit. Hope that helps, I just posted the tutorial on the planked look on the blog so let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!!
please post paneling technique. :). This is blowing up on Pinterest.
I just posted it : ) YAY!! ; ) Let me know if you have any questions!
Love this makeover. where did you find the pulls?
Thanks so much! The pulls are from Hickory Hardware!
Hi Ashley!
I’ve been wanting to use the Annie Sloan Dark wax but am having trouble finding it. Can you tell me where you purchased yours? Also, did you use a clear wax to seal it first or did you apply the dark wax directly over the paint?
Thanks,
Allison
This looks amazing! One question though. It looks like each drawer on the actual Rast dresser has two pre-drilled holes for the knobs that come with it. How did you accommodate for those holes when you decided to use a single cup pull on the center of each drawer?
