When I first drew up my design board for our kitchen I already knew the look I wanted. I was going for Modern yet rustic with an industrial flare. I’ve always been drawn to a more industrial style yet I’ve never had the right house to totally pull it off. We’ve moved often and I never felt I had the right kitchen for this approach. I always just did what worked with the house, but now that we have this amazing fixer upper that I love my vision for a Rustic Modern kitchen can become a reality. Today I’m talking about how to choose kitchen appliances because it’s one of the first steps towards your final kitchen design.

Watch this video where I talk about some of the things I look for when choosing appliances, and then head over to The Home Depot Blog for a full list of considerations and the appliances I used.
How to Choose Kitchen Appilancces
Choosing kitchen appliances sounds super easy. You just run over to The Home Depot and pick out your favorite ones right? Nope. Appliances are actually a HUGE part of designing a kitchen. They set the stage and are very often the focal point of your kitchen.

There are a few things I try and think about when searching for kitchen appliances. Functionality always comes first. Even as somebody who constantly posts pictures of my house for the blog I would never sacrifice my everyday life just so I can have the perfect picture. After functionality comes the look. Obviously cost plays a part in there as well, but that’s how I start narrowing them down.

You’d be really surprised how much the look of appliances can change the overall look of your space. You can get kind of a bulky look and an industrial vibe. Or you can go with something that has soft edges for a more traditional look. There are very modern/minimalistic designs. It’s actually a lot harder than you might think to find the right appliances!

You’re so right, the appliances have a huge impact on the overall look. Just think, that’s exactly why the top end manufacturers all offer a line of appliances that accept cabinet fronts so the appliance can be hidden.
I love that you make a point of the sound of the dishwasher. With so many open floor plans these days, there’s nothing worse than a noisy dishwasher! The noise level is listed in decibels on pretty much every dishwasher label. And when appliance noise is a concern, a range hood with a remote fan can be great option. This way, the fan noise is outside the house.
I love that you mentioned how you prioritize functionality when selecting kitchen appliances. My wife and I enjoy cooking dinner in our kitchen on weekends, and we would like to find a range hood that would be able to fit and function properly in our small kitchen area. It may be a good idea to look for some custom range hoods online so that I know that it will be able to work in our current kitchen layout.
