Maybe you’ve been reading blogs for a while. Maybe you’ve been building furniture, decorating, or crafting for years and just realized people are sharing their projects online. Maybe you would like to make a few extra dollars to support your hobbies, or maybe you are hoping to turn it into a full time career.
Well, today I’m here to walk you through the first steps of starting your very own blog.
Here is an outline of what I will walk you through today:

Domain Name and Hosting
One of the first and most exciting things you will do is choose your domain name and set up the bones of your site! To do this you will need to purchase your domain name and select your hosting service. I personally use Bluehost, whom I have found to be very reliable.
Let’s talk about how you can sign up with them to get things started!
Click here to visit the Bluehost website and purchase your domain name. You will be taken to their homepage via my affiliate link so you can receive a discounted rate!
Once you are on the Bluehost site, you will actually register the domain name of your choice. I suggest really making sure this is the name you want. While it is possible to go through a rebranding and change your name, it will cost you a lot of time, effort, and money. So make sure it’s a name you like ; ) If you already have a domain name registered with someone else, you can transfer it at this time.
Next you will enter all of your contact information.
Next, select which package you want. This is how you decide to pay. With Bluehost you prepay depending on the term you choose, so that means you pay 1 time upfront. Prepaying for 36 months is the cheapest way to do it, but if you are unsure where blogging will take you, you can opt to pay a little more for only 12 months. Of course they have a 30 day money back guarantee should you change your mind (please verify this with Bluehost as their policies may change). You also have the choice of a few addons.
After you have selected how you will pay, it’s time to make that payment. Choose your payment options, read and agree to their terms and conditions, and click next.
Installing WordPress
Now that you have your account created, your domain name selected, and purchased your hosting you plan, you can log in to your c panel. From there you can build your wordpress site by clicking on the wordpress icon.
Now fur the fun part. It’s time to start building your blog by clicking the start button below.
Select the domain name you want to install wordpress on. This will be the domain you registered with Bluehost.
Now it’s time to name your site and create your login. Choose a username and password, which you will use to login to your wordpress account.
Now wordpress will begin installing.
Make it Your Own
- After wordpress has finished installing you may begin building your blog. I suggest going with the Genesis Framework.
- Then choose a child theme to obtain the style you are looking to achieve. I use the “Fun Theme” from Pretty Darn Cute Designs, but there are tons out there, so take a look through all the different child themes and choose the one that fits your vision for the blog.
- You can either make customizations yourself if you understand the basics of html, or you can hire a professional to help you with a custom design.

Hi Jessica, making an income with blogging definitely takes some time. Before you can work with brands you have to build up a social media following and some pageviews. What I would suggest doing is starting with affiliate marketing. That you can do from your very first post! : )
