I recently finished my remodeling my kitchen, but if you turn around and face my dining area you would just see a hot mess. This wall opposite the kitchen was literally where I would just put all my unfinished projects and random tools. I have been patiently waiting for what I wanted to do with this space because it is a little awkward. Technically this whole room in our house is the kitchen, the world’s smallest dining area (when centered under the light fixture), and then a “family room”. But that would only work if you had a 2 person table and well… we have 5 in our family so I have transformed the space into a bigger dining room by eliminating the “family room”. To get a better idea of how it looked you can see what it first looked like here. We made quite a few changes over the last two years like painting our paneling and trim, and we also added new flooring during our kitchen renovation. But it was time for this space to be given a breath of life.
Even though I took away the small little family room area I still wanted this space to feel cozy and not necessarily part of the dining room, but it still needed to be part of the dining room, haha. It was challenging for me because I’m not exactly an interior designer. I played around with the idea of just putting a buffet/console piece on this wall, but it just wasn’t working for me. I also wanted something taller because this room is long and skinny so having everything eye level was just kinda boring, it needed a big piece of furniture to balance everything out so I built this rolling bookshelf. Our house was craving some personal touches so as I was searching the internet for inspiration I ran across a picture on pinterest of some farmhouse plates with the big black numbers so I started there!
I decided on ordering these plates from Shutterfly to represent each one of my kids. I love that they aren’t glass so they can’t be broken, and I just adore the simplicity of them. I uploaded my own design using a text that worked for this space. It was extremely easy to do!
Since my kitchen has an industrial farmhouse look to it I wanted to bring that farmhouse feel in to this side with not only these plates, but this metal sign I created. It is the perfect addition to my rolling bookshelf and it really connects the kitchen to this side of the space. Isn’t it amazing how one little piece of decor can do so much for a room?
Right next to the bookshelf is a little sitting area I’ve added. I love to sit here and drink coffee in the morning before everyone wakes up. It’s the only time of day where I feel like I can get my thoughts together.
I loving having a pillow handy, but to be honest I have a hard time leaving them on chairs because my kids just throw them all over the floor.
I designed this gray pillow on Shutterfly with a list of important dates that represent our family. I seriously love the color of this pillow and how it turned out. It’s so fluffy and is great to have in my lap when I’m curled up in my chair! But when it’s not in use it sits nicely in my old milk crate.
I am so close to finishing this whole room and this bookshelf was the boost I needed to get it done! I love how it combines our dining room with a small little sitting space yet still feels connected.

I LOVE the toolbox you have on the bottom shelf. A couple years ago, I picked up a new-ish one at Goodwill. It is bare wood and is in need of a DIY to make it better. But I’ve never known what to do. Totally inspired now by yours, because McKinney is my mom’s maiden name and I live not far from Pittsburgh. Still not completely sure how to change up my toolbox, but your’s has inspired me to give it some more thought!

Thank you Lindsey! They are old window frames : ) My dad actually brought me these that he has had forever. But I usually run across some pretty similar at antique malls where you can browse through lots of vendors! Hope that helps some!
