I’ve decided to do a craft show…at the end of October. My first one ever, and I give myself 2 months! I’m crazy. It’s official : ) But I am super excited and have obsessively been searching for ideas for my booth… I have to keep reminding myself to make things because I won’t have anything to put on all my pretty displays! Anyways…. I feel sort of consumed with that and I totally meant to post this a while back!
You might recognize this. It was one of my pieces in the finale of So You Think You’re Crafty.
PS. new season started this week so hop on over and vote : )
I have really come to love burlap. It’s quite useful and I love how it makes everything look all burlap-y (sometimes when I can’t find the word I’m looking for I just add a “y” to the end) hehe!
{The Tutorial}
First I took a white tray I got on clearance at Hobby Lobby (another ture love of mine), but it had some drawing on it that just didn’t go with my decor… ok nothing I buy really goes with my actual decor, but that is because I’m on a secret mission to redecorate my house without letting my husband in on it! SHH! But who can pass up a $4 tray?
So I painted it! I happened to have some left over paint from a big FAT FAIL that I had done the week before.
It took a few coats. Then I let it dry while I worked on my burlap.
First I cut a bunch of strips about 1.5″ wide.. I should have measured out how much I wanted, but I’m impatient when I’m ready to do something so I just started cutting… I had a few ton of strips left over. But it’s ok, I will use them! I have a whole bag of impatient scraps!
Then I just started weaving the burlap strips and kept going until it filled the space I needed.
Then I ever so carefully picked it up (really, be careful here or it will all fall on the ground or maybe wait until the tray is dry and weave it on top of the tray (just thought of that)
I had some left over burlap hanging off the edge so I used my rotary cutter to trim it up to fit right in the bottom.
Then I whipped out my modge podge (which I totally adore!)
starting to realize I have a relationship with my craft supplies
and slapped some of that stuff on the button of the tray. I folded the burlap in half so I didn’t have to move it completely off.
I laid it back down and did the same thing to the other side.
Then I put several coats on top of the burlap. Honestly I think I might have liked it better if I just left it alone and not put any on the top… I’ll leave that up to you!
let it dry. and there you go. A weaved bottom burlap bed tray!
