Now that I’ve shared the Exterior Design for our new construction, let’s talk about the Landscape Design I received from Tilly! I’ve never been a part of a landscape design before. Sure I’ve planted a few things here and there. However, the whole shebang is something I have zero experience in, much less starting from scratch on our empty lot! So once our home was mostly complete and we were getting ready to move in, we knew we’d need to tackle our yard. That’s when we decided we would need help! I reached out to Tilly and they literally handed me a document with all my dreams attached! We will start at the beginning, but first, let’s take a little Video Tour of our Modern Prairie Landscape Design!

Getting Started with a Landscape Design
There are so many things that go into landscaping, and unless you are a landscape architect, it can be quite difficult. With Tilly, they are on a mission to make professional landscape design accessible to more homeowners. And that is exactly what they have done! While designing a full acre of landscaping isn’t something I could easily do, I absolutely LOVE the actual work of planting everything. With the digital design and no obligation to then hire out the work of professional landscapers, I get the best of both worlds this way. I get a professional design from qualified landscape architects. Then I can plan out in phases and do some of the work myself, therefore, saving a TON of money! Here are some of the before photos I sent them!
We will hire some of the things out, especially the hardscapes. I plan to tackle all the planting and maybe even a pergola (and other similar projects) on my own! Tilly is literally changing the way homeowners approach their yards, by providing more options. You can either hand these plans off to a professional landscaper, or you can do everything yourself. Or you can even do a little bit of both giving you so many options!
Tilly’s Design Process
The Planning
Once I decided to go with Tilly, and set up an account I scheduled a call with our designer, Brett. Then I created a Pinterest board with some landscaped inspiration. After she took a look at some of my information and inspiration photos we FaceTimed while I showed her around our property talking about all the specific things I was looking for. I also had to submit my site plan, and then she got to work!
The Design
As Brett worked on our design, she emailed me a few times to make some clarifications. Not long after I got the first round of design work! My design packet came with so much information from the actual layout and plant placement to a full list of everything I would need. This is also a great way to see how hardscapes will turn out. I love getting to see everything in 3D and how the scale works for this Modern Prairie Landscape Design!
Revisions
As soon as I received our landscape plan I was in love. There were a couple of minor things I wanted to be changed. Nothing huge, she literally somehow turned all my crazy unorganized thoughts into what my brain was actually imagining. Brett fixed everything I asked her to and we were left with a gorgeous Modern Prairie Landscape Design. She also provided a list of all the trees and plants I would need!
Modern Prairie Landscape Style
Let’s talk about our style. To be honest I didn’t even know what to call this until I started explaining everything to Brett. She then informed me that I was looking for a Modern Prairie Style. I absolutely love a lot of the landscaping I see on the Pacific Coast. However, I live in the midwest, and can’t have those plants or nothing would survive the winters. That’s when Brett told me this Modern Prairie Landscape Design style would achieve a lot of what I was loving about the Pacific Coast style while using plants native to our area.
The description I gave her for my aesthetic was modern, organic, neutral, and naturalistic. From my research prairie is very natural looking. Not overly manicured. However I love clean lines so rather than finding those lines from within the plants, we achieved that by having nice clean lines that define the areas of our yard and hardscapes. Then I will use accessories to bring in a little bit more of a modern vibe.
Modern Prairie Backyard Landscape Ideas
Let’s take a look at the backyard design. There are quite a few different grasses in our design, and I love how they all work together to provide a naturalistic border for different areas of the yard while still keeping it all functional.
Modern Black Pergola & Outdoor Fireplace
We decided not to have a covered porch because I really want the natural light to shine through our sliding doors into our dining area. However, we do get pretty direct sunlight in our backyard and I would like some option for shade. I think we will go with some type of pergola. I’m leaning towards a louvered pergola, but we might settle on a simple modern black pergola with the option of some kind of shade sail or a standard wood pergola. I love how Tilly added lights to the underside. We got pretty used to having a nice porch to sit on at our last house!
On our back patio, we want the option for both dining and sitting around a fireplace. While the fireplace will likely be a future project, we want to make sure we leave a place for it in our design. I’m really digging the seating on either side of the fireplace as well! We can get quite a bit of wind here in the spring, so I like that there would be permanent seating even before we put outdoor furniture back outside after winter!
Fenced-In Garden Area
This little space is all for me. I have wanted a garden for SO long but we’ve never lived anywhere long enough to invest in one. But since we will be here for at least the next 10 years or so (hopefully, hah!) I am chomping at the bits to get this ready to go. It won’t happen this year, but it’s at the TOP of my list for next Spring!
It will also have some fruit trees around it! The main reason for the fence is our yard will not be entirely fenced and so deer and rabbits will absolutely come to eat all the things. With it being fenced in I really want to do above-ground planters so I can easily care for everything! It will also be surrounded by rocks to avoid needing to mow in between them and keep the mud at bay. Here’s an aerial view to see the layout of everything.
Firepit Area
As you can see in the picture above there is a little fire pit area just to the right of our patio. I love the idea of this being off away from the back door, but it sits right outside our living room windows so I think it will provide a gorgeous view!
An Area for Yard Games
With our floor plan I designed it so that there was a side door that came directly into the mud room so my kids would be able to enter and exit without coming through our dining room. That way messy shoes etc can stay on the tile floor. Right outside that door is behind our garage, so I had this idea to create an area using faux turf where the kids could set up bean bag toss, spike ball, horse shoes, etc, and play games in an area where it doesn’t get muddy and it doesn’t need to be mowed. This little nook seemed like the perfect place!
You can see the detached garage in the plans, that’s not something we have right now or we are sure we will ever do, but I wanted to make sure that our plans left a spot for that in case we ever wanted a workshop. It will just be grass for now.
Pet Relief Area
We have a giant 80lbs Goldendoodle who kills my grass every time he uses the restroom. We thought it would be a good idea to have a little rock area that we could train him to use. This will especially be nice in the winter because we can shovel the sidewalk around to the rock area instead of him killing a giant patch of grass every year! It’s still a mystery if we can actually get him to do that, but I’m hopeful with a little training.
Creating Privacy in a Modern Prairie Landscape Design
One important thing I mentioned during our call was that I wanted trees along our property line to create privacy. We also have a dog so I’d like there to be a natural border because right now it’s just open to everyone else’s property.
Modern Prairie Front Yard Landscape Design
The front yard is a lot less involved and just some basic landscaping. The most important thing to me was that we use some stuff that wouldn’t die back in the winter because we spend so much of our time where plants don’t have their leaves. They used quite a few evergreens and mixed in some hydrangeas. I love how it all came together!
Then there is also some landscaping along the border, just not as much as the backyard.
This will definitely be a multi-phase project. I’ll be focusing on getting some trees planted this year, and then we will let all the dirt around the house settle before we do any landscaping. So next Spring I will be outside nonstop basically and I’m not mad about it!
If you are looking for help with your landscaping Tilly also creates plans around your existing trees and such so definitely reach out! The visual aid and planting schedule is SO helpful!

So when you count how many beats are in one minute of a song played at a specific tempo, you can quickly determine the Beats Per Minute or BPM counter. And if you’re pressed for time, count the beats in 15 seconds of music, and then multiply that number by 4.

Yes, the article is really just great, and a beautiful exterior is important in building a house! I believe one of the most important elements in building a new home is installing quality windows and doors. When I was building my house, my husband and I found windows and doors brampton company and were pleased with their services. So if you are building your own house, I would advise you to contact this company.

This truly is a magnificent landscape design plan. If only may property was flatter, but I think I can still work around with some of these ideas. I’m getting some landscape designers from my local landscaping Victoria, BC company to come quote me on some work this week, so I’ll show them this. The outdoor fireplace area is my favorite!
A beautiful, trimmed green lawn always looks amazing. But in order for it to stay that way, you need to trim it regularly. Luckily, there are a lot of cool tools for this now, on The Inspired Gardener blog you can find a lot of useful information about this.
Good luck with your project! Your tireless efforts will soon pay off.
Good day! Becoming a designer is more challenging than it may appear at first glance. This profession demands significant effort, energy, and creativity. I have been dedicated to this field for an extended period, and I’ve amassed a considerable client base. I draw inspiration for my projects from web hosting images . These items prove invaluable in crafting captivating and dynamic presentations for my clients.
This modern landscape looks incredible, you could even include a resin area?
I love the attention to detail in the Modern Prairie Backyard Landscape Ideas. The mix of grasses, the design of the black pergola, and the inclusion of a fenced-in garden area with fruit trees show a thoughtful approach to both aesthetics and functionality. Looking forward to seeing the final result!
Each region has different planting times, mostly depending on the weather, and each vegetable has its own temperature preferences. In this blog https://gardeniaorganic.com/what-are-perennial-plants/ you can find more information about all the nuances. If shade is unavoidable in some areas of your garden, reserve those areas for cool-season vegetables that appreciate shade in hot weather.
Very interesting, thank you for bringing this up! The concept of getting a professional landscape design digitally and then being able to execute it at your own pace sounds empowering and cost-effective. It’s a great way to maintain control over the landscaping process while still benefiting from expert guidance.
I am impressed with the high quality and fit of the suit I ordered from America Jackets. Highly recommended! Next, I’ll be ordering Marty McFly jacket from them.
Your modern prairie landscape design is stunning! Love the clean lines and natural feel. The pergola and firepit area look perfect for cozy evenings. For added charm, consider layering different grasses for texture.
