We all love having a pretty home right? I’m pretty sure that might scare our bank accounts a little bit! Today I’m going to share a few ways you can decorate on a budget. With these tips you can acquire the looks you want at a fraction of the cost! I’m not going to lie, a lot of these tips and ideas do come with a little extra elbow grease and DIY knowledge, but don’t let that scare you.
Budget Friendly Decorative Pillows
I’ve often found that by shopping for pillow covers as opposed to the whole pillow itself tends to be more budget friendly. It also allows you to use a higher quality pillow inserts instead of the ones that go flat after one use.
My favorite Pillow Resources:
- Hobby Lobby – They offer a wide variety of pillow covers between $5-$20, but don’t forget you can use a 40% off coupon to make that price even lower, and keep an eye out for when they go 50% off! I made this DIY Antler Pillow using one of Hobby Lobby’s $5 pillow covers and a Sharpie!
- H&M – H&M offers moderately priced pillow covers that are very trendy. I’m always a fan of their pillow quality. I’ve purchased several from them and have never been disappointed!
- Amazon – Searching for pillows on Amazon can take a little bit more time, but you can find some pretty awesome ones if you look long enough. This is one of my favs. I haven’t actually bought it yet, but I will one day and it gets awesome reviews!
- Ikea – Is there really anything to say about this store you don’t already know? They are awesome, affordable, and always on trend!
Build Your Own Furniture
Building furniture might seem daunting at first, but if you just take it one step at a time and follow the directions it’s as easy as making a cake… just takes a little longer. If you’re still uncomfortable, I am actually in the process of writing a free ebook that will walk you through on how to get started in woodworking. I will teach you what all the tools are and how to use them, and basically every detail you need to know to get started! In the meantime, check out a few of my favorite builds. All of these projects were built at a FRACTION of the cost of something similar you’d buy online.

Do the Painting Yourself
Painting can be either a) Time Consuming or b) Expensive. We actually considered hiring some painting out at our last house, but the cost was just too high, and we ended up doing it all ourselves. If you are unfamiliar with painting I have a few tutorials to walk you through the process:
Change Hardware Yourself
Hardware in kitchens and bathrooms can make a huge impact! By adding or replacing the hardware you can completely transform a space! If you’ve never installed hardware I have a tutorial to get it perfectly straight the first time, totally eliminating the guesswork!
Craft it Yourself
Larger decor items can be a bit pricey, especially wall art. Sometimes you just have to make it yourself. Using Plaid’s new FolkArt Painted Finishes I was able to make a deer taxidermy mount look like concrete (which would have been really expensive) and all I had to use was paper mache and craft paint!
Accessorize Your Bathroom
Bathrooms can be another space in your home that seems like it’s going to be affordable but can quickly jump into the hundreds of dollars! I have a whole post on decorating your bathroom on a budget!
I hope these tips gave you a few ideas of how you can accomplish some of those things on your to do list, and save you some money in the meantime ; )

For those who want to make their own furniture – many DIY and hardware stores cut the panels and other material to desired size, so making your own furniture is much easier than most people think.
I would just suggest avoiding open shelves, since cleaning of such surfaces can be problematic. Glass doors are excellent solution (glass can also be cut and edges smoothed in DIY stores). Glass is transparent and protect shelves from dust, for example …
