We’ve been in our house for four months now. We’ve accomplished quite a bit, yet it often feels like we’re moving so slow. I suppose that’s a drawback of living in a fixer upper. I knew this Christmas season would be full of sawdust, broken plaster, and rushed projects. This past month was smack dab in the middle of a kitchen renovation, but I was determined to set up one living space for our family to spend a few cozy nights together despite our busy schedules. Today I’m teaming up with Hayneedle for their “I Wish” Campaign because this season I simply wish for cozy nights with my family.

Since we actually plan to stay in this house for a while I’ve really been struggling with the direction I want to take it. It’s been somewhat easy so far because I’ve only completed my daughter’s room and a bathroom. The kitchen is almost done, but if I’m being totally honest bathrooms and kitchens come a lot more naturally to me than living spaces. I don’t know why I just tend to overthink those spaces.

Rustic Eclectic Dining Room
One thing I knew for sure was that I really wanted to blend the historical features of our home with modern conveniences. I know I’ll probably get some hate mail over this but I absolutely HATE wood trim and baseboards. I’ve seen it done well in many houses and I don’t hate it for other people, but for me it just doesn’t work. I plan on painting ours but for now I’m just trying to work with what I have.

We have this giant living room space that is really meant to be two spaces. There’s the front of this room which faces our front porch, and then this little section by the fireplace. I really want these two spaces to be distinctly different yet work together because of the wide connected space.

Casual Sitting Room
I’ve really been inspired by colorful rugs lately which totally goes against every bone in my body, but if there was ever a house to try something new, this is the one! I found this rug on Hayneedle and it just felt right so I went with it! I also knew I wanted to incorporate some leather. Since I didn’t want this little area by the fireplace to be formal, this is my play on a casual sitting area.

It allows plenty of room for entertaining, extra eating space with this round table, comfy sitting options (this settee and these poufs), and it’s all anchored by our media center that doesn’t look like a media center at all! I was really trying to avoid having the TV be the center of the room and this space be more about where we spend time as a family, but at the same time this is the room where the TV goes, so I knew I had to hide it somehow, and what a gorgeous way to hide it!

Winter Sitting Room
In all honesty I just got this space pulled together so I really wanted to let Winter shine with a few Christmas accents. We didn’t have a place to put a big Christmas tree this year because what you don’t see is the other side of this room completely covered in boxes while we finish up our kitchen. I absolutely adore this tree though because it feels like we just went up a mountain to cut it down. It’s the most beautiful Charlie Brown Tree ever!

During this season I’m often reminded how blessed I am. And no matter what chaos I’m standing in the middle of I have three beautiful children, a wonderful husband and a cozy place to spend time with my family. I am truly blessed and grateful! Merry Christmas everyone! May you find the blessings in your life and hold on to those because each and every one of them are precious!

It was a great post indeed. Actually, I was looking for some household ideas to save my sofas and carpet from dizzy and oreo’s (my labrador friends) hairs and landed on this article. ANyway, I got some cool ideas to set my interior accordingly now.
That is really wonderful experience you shared. We are going to try those colorful area rugs.
