Industrial Attic Office Design

Everyone is a dreamer. Some of us might dream more than others, but we all do it. I’m a dreamer 100%. I love to think of all the fun things to do. Unique things to try and just big big plans in general. My real struggle is in the details and actually executing my plans. So today let’s celebrate dreaming big and talk about our attic design plans.

Here’s the current state of our attic space. It’s not good. We won’t even discuss what this space looked like during our showings. But I’ve since given it a thorough bleaching!

Right now this room is completely full of all our stuff. Since we’ve been busy with our kitchen and bathroom remodels, plus just all the other little things, when we first moved in we put pretty much everything up there. One day I hope for it to be a gorgeous office space.

There’s actually a few things we will need to do legally before we can bring this space to its fullest potential. This room is only part of the attic, there’s a whole unfinished side that is screaming at me to do something amazing!

I’m told we will need a 2nd exit for fire codes and skylights for enough window space. We haven’t really gone through all the logistics with the city yet, but I can’t stop dreaming of all the natural light pouring into this huge open space! Natural light from above provides such a balanced light throughout the room and helps colors appear true. Natural light is a key part for the transformation of this attic space. I just know it will make everything (paint color, rug pattern, finishes) look even better.

Ok, so let’s talk design. I’m really torn between painting the floors a super dark gray, or a white. I think I’m leaning towards an all white room with black accents. I’d love to have these VELUX No Leak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights that provide natural light from above, fresh air, a sky view and tree views (if you have tall trees near your home). Sky views are calming because they connect you to nature. Think about lying on the grass as a child and staring up at the clouds – that’s the feeling having skylights can create inside your home.

Skylights would be a great option for us since we don’t have an AC. These remote operated skylights open to release warm air that rises to the ceiling. By also opening a window below, you can create a breeze that cools your home without needing to cool the house with an AC.

Solar Power Blinds are an amazing option for skylights. Blinds will give me control over the light by being able to block it when needed. This is perfect for our office, especially since I prefer to edit pictures in the dark and I could easily eliminate any glares on the screen. Since I’m considering going all white in here the blinds are a great design element that can provide a pop of color. When retracted you can even tell the skylight has blinds.

As much as I want pretty little desks that are gorgeous to look at, I need storage. Right now I feel like I’m drowning in paper because we have no where to file things and it’s getting extremely frustrating. One of the best ways to stay organized is putting everything in its place. Well…. that’s hard to do when you don’t have a “place”.
