But first let’s take a look at how you can build this Industrial Farmhouse Coffee Table.
For my large project I built this industrial farmhouse coffee table. It’s the perfect build to get started with if you are nervous about woodworking! No fancy cuts or anything difficult!

- Ryobi Miter Saw
- Ryobi Drill
- Ryobi Finish Nailer
- Kreg Jig
- 1 1/4″ Kreg Jig Screws
- 2 1/2″ Kreg Jig Screws
- 1 1/2″ 18 guage Finish Nails
- Wood Glue
- Ryobi Sander
- FolkArt Home Decor Chalk in Black
- FolkArt White Wax
- FolkArt Wood Tint in Walnut and Gray
- FolkArt Home Decor Chalk and Wax Brushes
Lumber:
- (4) 2x2x8′
- (2) 1x4x10′
Cut List:
- (5) 2×2’s @ 18″
- (4) 2×2’s @ 16 1/2″
- (4) 2×2’s @ 37″
- (6) 1×4’s @ 40″
How to Build an Industrial Farmhouse Coffee Table
Step 1. Assemble the two squares with Pocket Holes and Wood Glue, which will be the sides of the coffee table base.
Step 2. Attach the side Rails to both sides of the base using Pocket Holes and Wood Glue
Step 3. Attach the center support using Pocket Holes and Wood Glue.
Step 4. Assemble the top of the coffee table using wood glue and pocket holes.
Step 5. Attach the top to the base. You can do this in two ways:
A) Apply wood glue to the top of the base, and clamp the top to the base and attach with finish nails. Leave clamps in place until the wood glue is dry.
B) Attach the top using wood screws through the bottom side of the top of the base. You will want to pre drill your holes to avoid splitting.
Finishing Techniques
The Top of the Coffee Table:
After sanding the top I applied one coat of FolkArt Wood Tint in Walnut per the instructions on the bottle. Immediately after I applied a coat of FolkArt Wood Tint in Gray. Then I let this dry and applied a coat of FolkArt White Wax.
The Base:
I really wanted the base to look like metal so I started off with FolkArt Home Decor Chalk in Black. I applied enough coats so that you couldn’t see any wood through. Once that was dry I rubbed FolkArt White Wax into the wood with a lint free cloth. I applied very little and rubbed quite a bit. This gave it that powdered texture that metal tends to have, almost a little foggy if that makes sense.
And that’s how I created our new Industrial Farmhouse Coffee Table!

Do you suggest sealing the wood with anything after tinting? Or does the wax serve a similar function as sealing it would?

Your 6 1×4’s equal a width of 24’’ but your width with the square boxes is 22’’? Are you leaving 2’’ for leeway? It looks flush so shouldn’t it be 22’’?
Finished dimensions of a 1×4 is actually approx 3/4 x 3-3/4” which would result in the top being around 22-1/2” wide, not 24”.
What a creativity! credit goes to the other. I’m a huge fan of DIY work and your article inspired me to do some DIY work.

Love this project!! What type of wood did you use for the top? Never used folkart wood tint before, definitely going to get some!
Made these last week. I modified the plans to make 2 smaller ones that are approx the same combined size as your table. I used plywood and edge banding for the top. and followed your guidance exactly on the bases with the folk art paint. they turned out really awesome! thank you so much!!

I’m looking to take on this coffee table as my first furniture woodworking project, but I’m struggling with the type of wood to use. I hear that pine is too soft, but hardwoods seem expensive for a starter project. Any suggestions?
