Rustic Industrial Kitchenette Design Plans: See how an outdated space lacking function can be transformed into a useable space. Perfect for a mother-in-law suite or small kitchen space.
Spring is just around the corner and it’s time for the Spring 2019 One Room Challenge! I participated last fall for my daughter’s Pink and Gold Bedroom. (Start at week 1 to see how her bedroom progressed). It was such an accomplished feeling when it was all over. I definitely work better on a deadline so this event helps me meet my goals!
For this One Room Challenge we are doing a complete renovation of our upstairs kitchen, I’m calling it The Kitchenette. I’m mainly inspired by a coffee shops for this space and want this area of our house to be a functional kitchen space, yet not scream “I’m a Kitchen”. I want a cozy sitting nook feel since it’s at the top of our stairs in a little landing area.

If you are new around here, or don’t remember we bought a huge fixer upper last fall that was originally a duplex. I haven’t talked about this a whole lot on the blog because there are just some things that are hard to talk about, but last year around the time we bought this house my father passed away.
I’m not one to share my emotions easily and I’m pretty good at keeping things shoved down deep (not that I suggest this lifestyle). But he’s an amazing man who taught me so much about DIY and is the reason I’m able to do most of what I can do when it comes to remodeling houses. Since he has passed my mom has been staying with us and she recently went on a trip with a friend so we thought it was the perfect opportunity to start the renovation on this space for her. Here’s a look at the before pictures from the first day we got the keys:
I’ve shared some of our progress on IG already, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to finish everything while she was gone. We did manage to get through the bulk of it and definitely all the messy stuff so that was amazing!

I know the ORC is a 6 week event and I wanted to stay true to that time period so with that said I did start a little early because of her planned travel and also because we have some travel plans coming up that will be the last few weeks of the challenge. So my timeline was a little shifted, but we will have everything done in the 6 week time period. I just wanted to be transparent about that part!
Here’s my six week schedule:
- This week: Share the design plans
- 2nd Week: DIY Faux Brick Wall
- 3rd Week: 2×4 Kitchen Cabinets
- 4th Week: Install Vent Hood in Open Shelving
- 5th Week: DIY Cabinet Doors
- 6th Week: Final Reveal
I can’t wait to take you on this journey and share how it all comes together. Be sure and follow along with me on Instagram for behind the scenes looks through my process. You can also sign up for my emails here so you don’t miss out on the posts!
