It’s reveal day! The One Room Challenge is always… well… a challenge. Especially when you decide to take on a a room that needed a total gut job. So when we first bought this house we rented and dumpster and went through and demo’d everything that desperately needed it. This upstairs Kitchenette was one of those things. So we started off with all the cabinets removed, but that’s really as far as we got. We were able to refinish the floors when we did all the upstairs bedrooms, but let’s take a peek at what this space used to look like. This post contains affiliate links.
It might not look terrible in pictures, but guys… there was legit food running down these cabinets. I didn’t even want to clean them, we just started tearing things out! The picture below is probably a better representation.
But all that is gone now, so let’s take a stroll through our newly finished space!
Rustic Industrial Kitchenette Before and After
I know this makeover is all about the kitchenette, but if I’m being totally honest, this little dining nook turned out to be one of my favorite little spots!
I struggled a little with this space because sometimes as a blogger I get caught up in the design and want everything to look great for photos. But this kitchenette really needed to be about function so I did my best to combine the two!
Functional Storage in a Small Kitchenette
I really wanted my mom to have a functional space that looks great, has a cozy feel and didn’t scream kitchen. As I’ve been saying this whole time, but I really wanted a coffee shop vibe were she felt like she could just hang out and relax.
The function came in the little details. We added a vent hood with a charcoal filter so that she would be comfortable cooking. Since she really didn’t want a full range, we opted for a double burner on a rolling kitchen cart that she could easily move around if she wanted.
Versatile Kitchen Storage Ideas
That way if she needs some extra space she can move this right over to be an island without taking up too much space! It also provides some extra storage for her.
Most of the time the rolling island will stay tucked away, but we loved the versatility it gave us!
DIY Kitchen Cabinets
The cabinets have to be one of my favorite features. We built them ourselves very affordably and they turned out way better than I could’ve ever imagined! They aren’t perfect, but what really is??
We decided against upper cabinets because I’ve just fallen in love with the open feel that we got in our downstairs kitchen and ended up using the same rails from Ikea up here.
Moment of honesty, you’re totally seeing some of the same items from our downstairs kitchen because we were getting ready to leave on a 2 week road trip and I had to shop my own house. ; )
Industrial Style Sink in a Kitchenette
This sink is just amazing for this space. We went with a slightly smaller single bowl that didn’t take up too much counter space, yet still provided enough room for washing dishes, etc. And this faucet just screams coffee shop to me so it was a must!!
Ok, let’s head back over to the dining nook because it makes me so happy!
Eat in Kitchen Space
It’s not a very big space so we needed a rather small table, and having a bench on one side allows you to get it a little closer to the wall without skimping on seating. This Draper Large Decorative Bench was the perfect find. I always love incorporating leather (or faux) for texture and warmth. This bench is the perfect height to go with a table, and if you’re like me and constantly moving things around its also very versatile1
I’ll have a full source list at the bottom of this post if you want to know where any of the items are from.
Well… that’s about it. I haven’t quite finished the wall with the fridge yet, but I’ll be sharing that pretty soon. It’s going to have some pretty awesome organizational things going on!
