We are nearing the one year mark for living in this house. At times it feels like we haven’t made any progress, however when I look back over all the renovations we’ve completed I’m reminded how much we have actually accomplished.
So far we’ve renovated a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and a kitchenette. We’ve also refinished most of the hardwood floors and painted all the walls and trim on the 2nd level. The house has been converted from a duplex back to a single family home. We had our entire exterior roofed and sided, and had all the windows replaced. Then just recently we had our front yard sodded and backyard seeded. Whew!! But we can’t slow down yet because there’s still a ton of work to do! Next up on our list is one of our upstairs bathrooms. I’m going to call this our “Master Bathroom”. In all reality it’s the biggest bathroom in the house and it’s closest to the largest bedroom. We prefer to be on the main level so we use the bedroom downstairs and the black and white industrial bathroom as ours, but that’s just personal preference.
Master Bathroom Design Plans
When we first moved in to this house we rented a dumpster and immediately demoed a few spaces because they were just SO BAD. This bathroom was very high on that list. I can’t even begin to describe the nastiness we encountered. So we tore most everything out and just stapled some plastic over the hole in the hallway wall until we were ready to tackle this space. We clearly have more demo to do though. Here’s a look at how it was when we moved in, and what it looks like today in its partially demo’d state.
As far as what we plan to do to this space here’s a full list:
- Extend closet that is at the end of the bathtub. Creating a full size closet for the bedroom adjacent to this bathroom.
- Build out hallway wall and frame new door opening.
- Convert bathtub to stand up shower.
- Re-route plumbing for shower to make sense with the space.
- Install PURPLE XP® Drywall.
- Add new tile flooring.
- Install tile in stand up shower with new fixtures.
- Add New Toilet.
- Install new vanity & add storage.
- Install shower door.
- And anything else that presents itself.
One of the most exciting things for me is adding the closet into my son’s room (The adjacent room I mentioned above). They basically closed it off and his closet was an access panel to the plumbing. But since all this will be getting re-worked it’s going to make everything more functional!
Adding Moisture, Mold and Mildew Resistant PURPLE Drywall
Since we’ve already completed quite a bit of the demo let’s dive into the PURPLE XP® Drywall. When I was presented with the opportunity to work with National Gypsum I did a lot of research. Ahh, the joys of working with that old plaster lath and the framing behind it! Forget about studs placed 16″ on center!
At the risk of offering a suggestion you already know very well…….One great way of furring out the original framing to achieve plumb and square is to use steel track and studs screwed into the sides and slightly forward of the wood studs.
I look forward to seeing if you decide to keep any of the old cast-iron and galvanized waste and vent piping.
