It’s Week 4 of the One Room Challenge and I’m finally getting to do some decorating! I’m just waiting on my furniture to be delivered and then things can really get going. But I knew I wanted minimal art above our bed with large mats and today I’m going to share how I made this Tree Ring Art Set for under $50! If you look at art often you know that’s a good deal for such large frames with matting.
To cut down on cost I created my own printable, which you can also download below! Then instead of buying a big frame with a large mat I opted for a cheaper DIY version. I got two poster frames and then went to Hobby Lobby and had custom mats made. The mats where more expensive than the frames, but when you want a specific look this is great way to get what you want without paying hundreds!
Affordable DIY Large Mat Picture Frames
What you need:
- 2 – 18×24 Black Poster Frames

Set of 2 Minimalist Black and White Tree Ring Art
For these frames I created this Tree Ring Art. You can download the art below by filling out the form to access to my Printable Library!
Then I purchased a custom mat from the framing department at Hobby Lobby. I asked for the mat to be the size of my poster frames (18×24) and have it matted to 8×10. You can choose whatever size you would like, but this allows the printables to be printed at home on your printer and easily frame without any trimming. For the mat I went with a white with a black interior so that when they cut the framing out you see a black edge on the beveling. I feel like this just adds to a custom feel and really made the art pop since it’s white with a white mat. Sometimes the smallest details make all the difference!
I chose to leave the plastic out of the frame, mainly because glares drive me crazy on art, but you can certainly leave that in. And in all honesty it’s also partly because when I photograph it’s just easier. ;)

Here’s my plan for the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge. It very well might change just given potential shipping delays, but I’m going to do my best to stay on track!
